FAQ

Why can’t the registrar do the consulting, then certify us?

Registrars do not provide consulting because it is viewed as a conflict of interest to consult with a company and then soon after certify it to a standard.

Then – what services do the registrar provide?

Registrars are allowed to perform:

  • Awareness training
  • Auditor training
  • Training not directly related to implementation of a standard
  • Pre-certification audits
  • Certification audits
  • Surveillance audits
  • Re-Certifications

What services do consultants provide?

  • Training
  • On-site consulting assistance
  • Outsourced internal auditing,
  • Outsourced quality manager/ISO Mgmt. Rep.
  • Facilitate periodic Management Review Meetings

Any other services desired by the client that do not interfere with the decisions of the registrar to grant or maintain certification.

What connection do consultants have to registrars?

There should be no direct connection or exchange of monetary value. There are some independent auditors that serve one or more registrars that also provide consulting services. In this case the independent auditor/consultant would not work or consult with the same client that he/she would later audit. Registrars work hard to maintain clear separation and avoid any possible conflict of interest.

Are we required to use a consultant?

No, it is not required. Consulting ultimately is an exchange of knowledge and knowledge can come from different sources. Many companies select a consultant because they want to efficiently implement a certification within a reasonable time frame.

What does it cost to hire a consultant?

The rates vary. However, “you get what you pay for.” Certain consultants can charge more because they have more experience and can help you effectively reach your target in a most efficient manner. As in most professional fields, you are normally better off hiring a true expert.

What do the registrars charge?

Again it varies (a little). Selecting the “cheapest” registrar is often a fatal mistake. Focus on the relationship. You will have to live with the registrar long after the consultant has finalized your quality system.

Do registrars have to maintain some kind of certification or credentials?

Yes. Ask for it and listen closely to the answer.

Do consultants have to maintain some kind of certification?

No, it is not required, but most have some kinds of credentials. At least check for experience.

Why choose a registrar based in the Houston area?

There are over 50 registrars operating in the United States (some operate all over the world). Some specialize in certain industries which tend to be geographically concentrated (e.g., auto industry, aerospace, etc.). If you find one you like, just make sure they are accredited.

Because Houston is such a large business hub, many registrars have a Houston Office. This typically results in their auditors also calling Houston home. For Houston area companies seeking certification, this results in a savings in auditor travel expenses and more flexibility in choosing your on-site audit dates.
